The Canopy at Rowe Sanctuary: Sandhill Crane Migration

Friday, March 19 – Sunday, March 21 | Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary

Join us for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Nebraska’s Platte River Valley during one of the most spectacular wildlife events of the year: the annual migration of Sandhill Cranes.

Each spring, hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes gather along the Platte River, creating a remarkable display of wildlife and one of North America’s most extraordinary birding experiences. During our visit, we’ll witness crane season firsthand, learn more about Audubon’s conservation work at Rowe Sanctuary, and celebrate the landscapes and wildlife that make this region so special.

A highlight of our weekend will be Braided in Unison, a special celebration of the Platte River’s braided ecosystem and the conservation efforts that protect this vital habitat. We’ll also venture out with Prairie Wind Birding Tours for an early-morning prairie chicken experience, where we’ll witness the unique courtship displays, booming calls, and dances of Greater Prairie-Chickens in their natural habitat.

Throughout the weekend, we’ll connect with fellow Canopy members and Audubon staff as we deepen our understanding of the region's ecological significance and experience the beauty of the Central Flyway during peak migration season.

The Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary lies right in the heart of a critical spring staging area for migrating Sandhill Cranes. Join us as we experience one of the last great wildlife migrations on the planet, set alongside the beautiful Platte River.
